We get asked a lot of questions about bitumen and asphalt here at Bitumen Constructions, so we’ve put together some of the most common ones.
What is bitumen?
Bitumen is essentially a binding agent that is formulated from petroleum. It is typically black, dense and sticky and is used for many applications, including road constructions, driveways, waterproofing and roofing.

Is there any difference between bitumen and asphalt?
There is often confusion about whether bitumen and asphalt are the same, they are in some countries, but here in Australia, they are considered completely different products.
Bitumen and aggregate are mixed together, and this forms asphalt. Bitumen is simply the binder in the material. Asphalt is usually laid and rolled over a surface whereas bitumen is commonly sprayed onto the surface and then covered with aggregate. Asphalt has a smooth finish and bitumen is generally rougher.
